Startup coaches and mentors see one common trait in the startup businesses that achieve success. They are coachable. But what does that mean? We asked a few of our business analysts, and this is what we learned.
Way Yuhl, a business analyst for the Small Business Development Center of Coconino, explained it this way. “A coachable client must have a willingness to listen and to consider alternative ways of doing things. Even if they don’t want to, it’s that willingness to try that is so important.”
Another NACET coach agrees. Christine Bailey, from our Chandler Innovations Incubator, says that clients get stuck in limited thinking. “With our guidance and support, they can find their way around their blind spots and achieve a greater level of success.”
Finally, from NACET’s President and CEO, Annette Zinky, coachability is being able to “consider the applicability and potential impact of taking the advice.” She emphasizes that “It doesn’t mean always doing what you’re told, but it does mean being thoughtful and deliberate about what you do and don’t do.”
From all of this we can gather that trust and confidence are crucial to the coach/client relationship. And a bit of humility is key. If you didn’t need help, you wouldn’t have sought out a coach in the first place. Let them do their job so they can help you secure yours, first and foremost, and then jobs for others as you reach greater success.
A popular Forbes blogger, August Turak, writes about coachability. He says, “I often hear the argument that being coachable is a dangerous trait unless we are “certain” that we have the right coach. But while I am sympathetic, authentic change is a journey into the unknown, and a journey into the unknown is by definition a journey into uncertainty. Insisting on certainty is just another bogus constraint we impose to stay off the hook.”
The startup journey certainly has its scary moments. This often leads to finding excuses to give up or procrastinate. To ‘stay off the hook.’ At NACET, we’re here to help you stay on the hook, and to guide you on your journey.
NACET has supported clients from a variety of arenas over many years. No matter what type of product or service they sell, their success rests in being open minded. Success is more attainable when client companies will think outside the box, and we’re happy to help you do that. Remember, when business owners are coachable, the road to revenue grows less bumpy.
